2022年1月11日 · With the removal of cows in 1830 — and the transformation of the open space into a formal park in the 19th century — use of the Common by residents increased. In many of the earliest maps of Boston (including the one above) the Great Elm appears as one of the only tree on the Common.

As early as 1768 the British army regularly camped on the Common and, over the course of the conflict, constructed earthen fortifications for their encampment’s defense. Boston Common’s military associations remained well into the 19th century, with soldiers mustering on the grounds as late as the 1850s [Fig. 4].

In the 19th century as the Urban Parks Movement gained momentum, the Common began to acquire monuments, fountains, and artwork. Erected in 1897, the most famous of these memorials honors Colonel Robert Gould Shaw and the 54th Massachusetts Infantry, a celebrated regiment of free African American soldiers who fought in the Civil War.
