Also, don't just say "try buying an old 486 computer" After the 8086, the x86 line of processors got insanely complex. For this reason, I'm sticking to just the 8086. Though possibly an 8186 would be OK. Also, if there is a system-on-chip type 8086 setup, that'd be awesome.

The 8086 has a 16 Bit wide data bus. You need to combine 2 (8 bit wide) chips each, and wire A1-A17 on 8086 to A0-A16 on the chips. A18 and A19 are to be decoded for chip selects. You can use a 3-to-8 decoder here, just wire one input pin to GND or VCC. Looking at the pinout of the 8086 it seems to use multiplexed data/address lines.

To do an aligned access the CPU would output the same address on both upper and lower address bus. To do an unaligned access the CPU would output address X on one bus and X+1 on the other.
