The history of the Royal Marines began on 28 October 1664 with the formation of the Duke of York and Albany's Maritime Regiment of Foot soon becoming known as the Admiral's Regiment.

Over the period of the Troubles in Northern Ireland, The Royal Marines completed over 69 tours of duty. The Royal Marines play a big role in the Faklands Conflict. RM Commandos bravely defended the Falklands and South Georgia from the Argentine invasions.

Marine Gareth Wheddon was injured by an IRA bomb near Crossmaglen, Co.Armagh, Northern Ireland on the 9th November and died of his wounds 3 days later at Musgrave Park Hospital, Belfast.
